چکیده

Description logics (DLs) are an important family of formalisms for reasoning about ontologies. CEL (Classifier for EL) is a free (for non-commercial use) LISP-based reasoner for the description logic EL [2], supporting as its main reasoning task the computation of the subsumption hierarchy induced by EL ontologies. The most distinguishing feature of CEL is that, unlike other modern DL reasoners, it implements a polynomial-time algorithm, which allows it to process very large ontologies in reasonable time. The underlying description logic EL is a practically useful sub-language of EL introduced in [1]. Despite being less expressive than other description logics such as SHIQ and OWL, it offers a selected set of expressive means that are tailored towards the formulation of biological and medical ontologies, some of the most prominent of which are the Gene Ontology (Go) [7], the Galen Medical Knowledge Base (Galen) [5], and the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (Snomed) [3, 6].

A Second-Order Approach to Complex Event Recognition

Complex Event Recognition (CER for short) refers to the activity of detecting patterns in streams of continuously arriving data. This field has been traditionally approached from a practical point of view, resulting in heterogeneous implementations with fundamentally different capabilities. The main reason behind this is that defining formal semantics for a CER language is not trivial: they usu...

Hemolytic C-Type Lectin CEL-III from Sea Cucumber Expressed in Transgenic Mosquitoes Impairs Malaria Parasite Development

The midgut environment of anopheline mosquitoes plays an important role in the development of the malaria parasite. Using genetic manipulation of anopheline mosquitoes to change the environment in the mosquito midgut may inhibit development of the malaria parasite, thus blocking malaria transmission. Here we generate transgenic Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes that express the C-type lectin CEL-I...

Transcriptional regulation of the cellobiose operon of Streptococcus mutans.

The ability of Streptococcus mutans to catabolize cellobiose, a beta-linked glucoside generated during the hydrolysis of cellulose, is shown to be regulated by a transcriptional regulator, CelR, which is encoded by an operon with a phospho-beta-glucosidase (CelA) and a cellobiose-specific sugar phosphotransferase system (PTS) permease (EII(Cel)). The roles of CelR, EII(Cel) components, and cert...

Demonstration of cel operon expression of Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at elevated temperatures refractory to their growth.

When Escherichia coli was incubated at the growth-refractory temperatures of 48 and 54 degrees C, expression of the cel operon was demonstrated by phospho-beta-glucosidase activity. This enzyme activity was also detected at the growth-refractory temperatures in Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Thermotolerant and mesothermophilic mutants of E. coli, S. typhimurium, and P. aerug...
